KEY WORDS:

stem cells, basal cells, esophagus, esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus, esophageal cancer, lung development & regeneration.

We investigate the mechanisms of epithelial morphogenesis and maintenance. We are also interested in how stem cell abnormalities lead to diseases of the esophagus and lung. We have successfully built mouse models of viral infection, lung regeneration, pulmonary fibrosis, EA/TEF, eosinophilic esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus, and esophageal cancer. Additionally, we use human embryonic stem cells to model some of these diseases, meanwhile searching for novel drugs to treat them.
